MACCHIE SANTA MARIA

The charm of indigenous Irpinian Vineyards and the expertise of Macchie Santa Maria Cantine

A childhood spent playing among the rows of vines, caressing leaves that change color with the passing of seasons, breathing in the scents of native grapes, capable of telling a centuries-old story with their grains loaded with flavors united with the territory. This is how the project of starting his own winery took shape in the mind and heart of Oreste De Santis, founder in 2010 of Macchie Santa Maria Cantine, located in the mountain town of Montemiletto.

The location, which is strategic in terms of climatic trends, soil composition, the presence of hills and pleasant evening breezes, allowed this young entrepreneur to start growing 16 hectares of native grape varieties in the three areas dedicated to the most prized varieties of Irpinia in southern Italy: Falanghina, Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico.

It is a sustainable viticulture, which caters to the needs of the plants to accompany them to the maximum expression of their aromatic and evolutionary potential over the years. Small arrangements that make the difference, starting from the work in the vineyard to the transformation of the grapes in the cellar and the maturation in the cooperage.

There are 11 labels currently produced, all highly appreciated for the elegance and bouquet they give in every sip. The highest expression of the mastery of those who, like Oreste De Santis, have made their mission of excellent wine, can be found in the Taurasi Riserva DOCG Evocatus and in the two white reserves, Greco di Tufo DOCG and Fiano di Avellino DOCG.

All the wines have names that evoke military figures from the Roman army, a tribute to the Roman origins of the town of Montemiletto, from the Latin Mons Militum (mountain of the military) to indicate the gauge of each label and the well-defined character that is obtained from each individual vintage. Pieces of history that, thanks to publicly accessible products, will not be lost or forgotten, just like the volcanic eruptions in Campania enriched the soils destined for the cultivation of the Greco di Tufo grape variety with the remaining ash.

Or cellars that are left dormant for too long and then restored to their function as the cradle of wines with exceptional aging potential. Daydreaming continues at Macchie Santa Maria Cantine: the great thing is that upon waking up you can truly delight in glasses of wine with extraordinary aromas and flavors.
