A story of excellence in Sicilian haute pâtisserie
Pasticceria Cappello, located in the heart of Palermo, is a true institution in the Sicilian confectionery tradition. The history of this renowned pastry shop begins with Bartolomeo Cappello, born in 1887 in Boccadifalco, a district of Palermo. Bartolomeo, affectionately known as “Bartolo tre lire,” initially started a small dairy farm for milk production. In 1944, he moved to Palermo with his wife Provvidenza and their son Giovanni, opening a dairy shop to meet the primary needs of the post-war period.
The dairy, which also served as a small bar, soon began to artisanally produce ice cream during the summer. It was Giuseppe Ferruggia, Salvatore Cappello’s uncle, who encouraged the young Salvatore to embark on the art of pastry, teaching him the secrets of the famous Sicilian cannoli, buccellato, and genovesi. With an overwhelming passion for his craft, Salvatore became a Master Chocolatier and Master Pastry Chef.
His skill and dedication led him to create desserts that were like small masterpieces, with every detail meticulously crafted. His fame quickly grew, leading to appearances on television programs and earning prestigious recognitions, such as the inclusion of Pasticceria Cappello in the “L’Italia dei dolci” guide by the Italian Touring Club and “Bar d’Italia” by Gambero Rosso. Since 1997, Salvatore has also been a member of the Accademia Maestri Pasticceri d’Italia. Today, Salvatore’s son, Giovanni Cappello, proudly carries on the family tradition.
Also a Master Pastry Chef, Giovanni has participated in numerous international competitions, striving to reach his father’s level of excellence. Pasticceria Cappello is renowned for its wide range of products, encompassing both Sicilian and international flavors. Among the most appreciated specialties are the Torta Kenia, made with chocolate and coffee, and the Torta Volo, a chocolate mousse with a Bronte pistachio cream. Another highlight is the Delizia, featuring Bronte pistachio mousse and almond sponge cake.
Classic Sicilian treats such as Cassate, Cannoli, Sfinge di San Giuseppe, and Frutta Martorana are also not to be missed. Each product is handcrafted with high-quality ingredients, ensuring a unique gastronomic experience. In addition to sweet delights, Pasticceria Cappello also offers breakfasts, savory pastries and prestige buffets. The production of pralines, chocolate bars and subjects, along with fruit jams and jellies, complete the assortment.
