The Conte Leopardi estate is in the Marche region, in central Italy, in a hilly area along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Here there is an unspoiled area among the most beautiful in Italy: the Conero Riviera, which takes its name from Monte Conero, a limestone massif covered by a wonderful Mediterranean forest. This corner of paradise offers high quality wines that have an ancient tradition, well known for more than 2000 years. The wines produced by the Conte Leopardi winery are the result of an excellent winemaking experience, in full respect of the environment and eco-sustainability, and is considered one of the oldest companies, linked to the territory and tradition, handed down from generation to generation of the ancient family of the Leopardi Counts, which has been producing wine for over 700 years. Today, Count Piervittorio Leopardi and his wife Lidia are the owners of a modern winery, able to face the international markets with a production of highly appreciated wines, in step with the times and with the evolution of consumer taste. Count Piervittorio inherited the passion for viticulture and winemaking from his grandfather, and has dedicated over forty years of research, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. He says that the vineyard is the engine of the cellar, and to produce a good wine, excellent quality of the grapes harvested must be guaranteed. A few years ago, Piervittorio selected a Montepulciano clone with extraordinary characteristics, which was registered with his surname. With this Montepulciano variety the Conte Leopardi farm produces important wines, such as the Conero DOCG Riserva “Pigmento” and the Rosso Conero DOC “Casirano”, “Villa Marina”, “Fructus” and “Lidia”, obtained from grapes harvested in the 45 hectares (111 acres) of vineyards on the property.
Over the past decade, Count Leopardi has also made significant progress towards another pillar of the company’s approach: sustainability. In fact, the company switched to renewable energy with the installation of a solar panel system to power the machinery and equipment of the cellar. At the same time, the entire grape production is obtained with the rules of organic farming. Piervittorio has also worked in the cellar to reduce the use of sulphites in its wines, bringing the content to a quarter of what is permitted by law. One of the new wines, the “Talismano” Rosso Conero DOC 2019, is even produced completely without added sulphites.
In addition to the Montepulciano variety, Piervittorio has dedicated his interest to the cultivation of vines such as Sauvignon blanc and the indigenous Verdicchio, with which he produces excellent and elegant white wines of great success, such as “Calcare” Sauvignon IGT and “Castelverde” Verdicchio DOC. Another variety grown by the winery is Lacrima, a rare indigenous grape variety from this region, with which he produces the aromatic red wine “Lacrima di Morro d’Alba” DOC. Conte Leopardi produces other typical wines of the Marche, such as the Passerina IGT “Bassamarea” and the Pecorino DOC “Risacca”. In the wine list of the winery, we also find two sparkling wines: the first is the “Conte Leopardi Brut”, produced with Verdicchio grape, and the second is “Conte Leopardi Dolce”, produced with Moscato grape. All the wines of the cellar are highly appreciated for their great elegance, balance, fruity aromas, and pleasantness in pairing with food.
The modern cellar, which has an area of about 5000 square meters, processes the grapes harvested in the 45 hectares of the owned vineyards and produces about 500,000 bottles every year. Conte Leopardi also produces an excellent Extra Virgin Olive Oil, obtained from the olives produced in the company’s olive groves. From the passion for typical products is born today the new project that has allowed the production of first quality Pasta, produced with Italian durum wheat semolina, grown in the Marche fields.
